"These earrings are directly inspired by the 'The Marie-Antoinette Diamond Earrings' on display in the Smithsonian Institution. The pear shaped 'diamonds' are fabricated out of steel to match the originals facet for facet. The settings are fabricated out of silver to match the platinum replicas of the originals that were made by Harry Winston, Inc. in 1958. When the earrings were eventually sold to Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1928 she had Cartier replace the tops of the earrings with kite shaped diamonds set in platinum. The tops of the earrings are the only thing I did not attempt to copy.
"Marie-Antoinette was queen of France from 1774-1792. It is said that at the beginning of her reign King Louis XVI gave her earrings that contained the pear shaped diamonds set in the earrings on display in the Smithsonian. However, the history of these diamonds can in no way be confirmed by any evidence provided by the various owners of these jewels.
"These earrings are a symbol of a ruler belonging to an elite social class and carry the history of all that encompasses with them. Only they can confirm their origin and stand testimony to all the labor and forces that went into them becoming such powerful symbols. I believe the story they could tell would shed light into the reasons the French had their revolution, and violently overthrew their rulers. I also believe their story would sound familiar to many people and communities throughout the world today."

"These earrings are directly inspired by the 'The Marie-Antoinette Diamond Earrings' on display in the Smithsonian Institution. The pear shaped 'diamonds' are fabricated out of steel to match the originals facet for facet. The settings are fabricated out of silver to match the platinum replicas of the originals that were made by Harry Winston, Inc. in 1958. When the earrings were eventually sold to Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1928 she had Cartier replace the tops of the earrings with kite shaped diamonds set in platinum. The tops of the earrings are the only thing I did not attempt to copy.
"Marie-Antoinette was queen of France from 1774-1792. It is said that at the beginning of her reign King Louis XVI gave her earrings that contained the pear shaped diamonds set in the earrings on display in the Smithsonian. However, the history of these diamonds can in no way be confirmed by any evidence provided by the various owners of these jewels.
"These earrings are a symbol of a ruler belonging to an elite social class and carry the history of all that encompasses with them. Only they can confirm their origin and stand testimony to all the labor and forces that went into them becoming such powerful symbols. I believe the story they could tell would shed light into the reasons the French had their revolution, and violently overthrew their rulers. We are pleased to share work from Mobilia’s spring jewelry and sculpture exhibition, Journey Through Time: An Exploration of Artful Adornment and Sculptural Vessels Through the Ages.
It is with great excitement that Mobilia brings you the masterful works of over 50 national and international artists. This exhibition is planned in conjunction with the Society of North American Goldsmiths’ conference. Artists were invited to submit work inspired by a historical piece or time period, or, as an alternative, a collection of their newest work.
