Yuri Tozuka uses her work to explore the invention and expression of both humans and nature. She delves into these themes using both hand-fabrication techniques as well as hand-carved wax models that are cast in precious metals.
Statement
Pipe Jewelry: I have often found myself inspired by the intricacies of anatomy that animate living things. This inward focus on the beauty of the minute within a closed system helped me to see a previously hidden beauty within larger man-made systems. Considered a blemish on the landscape by some, I found a harmonious beauty within industrial installations. By fabricating these structures within the form of something typically beautiful, I hope to be able to share this insight with others.
Marionettes: My recent work with marionettes began as an expression of how we often overlook the true controlling forces within our lives; our internalization of experience. By first creating a focus on attention to detail, while drawing from the commonplace or traditional, I am able to re-imagine and repurpose both the form and function of that which inspires me. By creating this refocus, I hope to show others the world as I experience it.
