Gerri Rachins’ work is influenced by her love of color, the painting process, and the history of 20th century abstraction. She has been teaching color theory, painting, and drawing courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Massachusetts College of Art and Design for over a decade. The paintings in “A Regular Riot” are motivated by the seemingly simple acts of the painter’s studio practice combined with Rachins’ knowledge of color history and use in art and culture. She explores simple color structures in the paintings and expands upon them resulting in harmonious or discordant relationships.

The tools used by the artist are an important component of the work. When speaking about her paintings from, A Regular Riot, Rachins explains: “The brush circumference and the movement of my hand, initially determines the size and edges of the colored shapes in the paintings. As the shapes and colors develop, pictorial space emerges. In these paintings I wanted the illusion of space to appear shallow, overcrowded and jammed.

Gerri Rachins received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Philadelphia College of Art, and also studied at The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.

Rachins has been a Visiting Artist at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Danforth Art Museum, Framingham, Massachusetts, a Cultural Agenda Fund Panelist for the City of Boston, and Program Coordinator for the Boston Mayor’s Youth Arts Corps. She has also taught at New England School of Art & Design/Suffolk University, New England Institute of Art, de Young Museum in San Francisco, California and The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

A REGULAR RIOT STATEMENT

Inherent in these seemingly playful paintings is an underlying structure that is constantly disrupted by contradictions in color, shape, composition, and illusions of pictorial space. Fundamental visual elements intentionally shift, slip, and at times, slither away, suggesting a world in flux. The paintings are influenced by my thoughts about living in a media driven society in which everything clamors for our attention at the same time, and a cognitive state of partial attention is the norm.
