Statement

There are over 400,000 beetle species. They have survived since the dawn of the world, and are present in every nook and cranny on earth (excluding Antarctica).Pests or pets; they were worshiped in ancient Egypt and are used as decoration in Latin America.

Beetles are tiny biological machines and their movement reminds me of mechanical toys.  For many years, I have been exploring the boundary between decorative objects (mostly jewelry) and toys. This exhibition continues this theme, and is a result of my exploration of the myriad of beetle’s shapes and movements.

I have chosen to create the artwork for “Scarabaeus” using a combination of 3D printing black nylon/ABS and hand sewn cotton fabrics. The combination of hand made and computer aided design, freeform and precision, and soft and firm materials, enables me to create work that represents the spectrum between analytical and decorative, and from static to interactive and calls for close examination.

This is not an attempt to copy Mother Nature but a way to immerse the visitor in the world of beetles as I see it as an artist.
