Portable Works of Art: Earrings, Part II
December 9, 2023 – January 20, 2024
Earrings have been worn throughout the world since the Bronze Age. Europe’s oldest mummy, Otzi the Iceman, was discovered with a borehole in his earlobe.
Throughout history earrings were worn for protection, to ward of evil spirits, provide strength and promote good health. Pierced earrings were thought to help strengthen weak eyes, epecially effective if set with emeralds.
Gold earrings cured headaches, wearing one gold and one silver earring was even more effective. Pirates donned a gold hoop in one ear when surviving a shipwreck The ancient Egyptians and Romans wore earrings to signify social status.
Mobilia Gallery’s invitational exhibition presents an array of earrings featuring work from international artists. Thank you to all of the artists who contributed their work with such generosity and enthusiasm. We hope the viewer derives as much pleasure and opportunity for reflection from this exhibit as we did in putting it together.
