LINDA DOLACK: MADE IN MASSACHUSETTS

Linda Dolack has been working with beads for more than 25 years, dazzling viewers with glittering, beaded versions of iconic snacks, sweets, and pantry staples. Each grocery item is meticulously recreated, the artist hand-stitching and placing tiny antique and vintage glass beads, sequins, and rhinestones onto the treats’ original labels and packaging. When we proposed ‘Made in Massachusetts’ to Dolack, she was very excited about the iconic New England treats and nationally popular snacks that originated in the area. Her excitement and attention to detail is evident in this body of work — she has created some of her most intricate pieces to date.

Linda Dolack employs glass beads as a material to highlight our shared love for common, processed and junk foods we as Americans have grown to love and ultimately find comfort in. Recycled food wrappings are completely and reverently covered in an attention-grabbing mosaic of beading, not dissimilar to stained glass windows in a religious setting. This labor intensive application of tiny, sparkling beads elevates and celebrates their status and beauty. (right: Dolack’s expansive bead collection in her studio)

Inspired by how the pop artists of the 60’s attempted to depersonalize the ordinary, like what Warhol did for Brillo boxes or Campbell’s soup cans, Dolack lovingly repersonalizes and elevates one recycled wrapper at a time. By meticulously hand stitching beads to the original packaging, Dolack makes these objects beautifully worthy of notice and awe. As a parent and a consumer, Dolack surely has a history with these common processed foods and she celebrates that connection.

Linda Dolack graduated with a BFA, Magna Cum Laude in 1991, in both Photography and Painting, from Barat College, DePaul University. In 1997, Dolack received an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was also awarded the John Quincy Adams Fellowship.

In 2008, Dolack and her husband transformed 20 rolling acres into a hobby farm where they currently live and work. Horses, fish and frogs (Dolack is a licensed fish farmer, much to her surprise), dogs and cats are a part of their ebb and flow menagerie. Sprawling gardens provide an abundance of flowers, fruit and vegetables for themselves, their family and neighbors.
