Cynthia Toops’ brilliant technical skills are evident as she reinvents and transforms the potential of micromosaic inlay. The artist mixes polymer clay like paint,  creating limitless hues of color. She then rolls the polymer into threads, slicing  and minutely forming tile beads to inlay. Toops’ process is unique and distinctive.  Her intricate micro mosaic polymer clay brooches, beads, and necklaces are “miniature marvels.”

Cynthia often collaborates with her husband, Dan Adams, combining her masterful, micro mosaic skills with  Adam’s multi patterned, lamp worked glass beads, wood work and metal smithing.

The artists’ work can be found in various public collections including: the Cincinnati Art Museum, OH ; Kobe Lampwork Glass Museum, Japan; Mingei International Museum, CA; Museum of Arts and Design, NY; Museum of Contemporary Craft, OR; Museum of Fine Art Boston, MA; Newark Museum of Art, NJ; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; Racine Art Museum, WI; and Tacoma Art Museum, WA.

 

The House & Home series started with the “Guardian of the Vegetable Patch”. We made it for our friends who work so hard on their amazing gardens full of kale, zucchini, carrots, and tomatoes; also for those on the opposite end of the spectrum, happy to harvest even a few stems of chives.

“Guardian of the Lost Items” is for the numerous times when I ask myself, “What did I do with my glasses, keys, cellphone, scarf…

Squirrels and owls who live outside in nearby trees (Nut House and Tree House), and the pets who keep us company inside our cozy abode (Animal House).

“Home Body” is all about the joy of chilling out at home, something low key – reading, working on puzzles, etc.

Both “Row House” and “Memories of Portugal” are about clusters of houses and how the buildings fit together to form fascinating, intricate patterns.

Who wouldn’t want to live in a yellow submarine?
