AYA IWATA

Aya Iwata is considered one of the best enamelists in the country. In 2022, she was one of nine enamel artists worldwide invited to participate in Impertinente: Meeting of Enamel and Metal, an exhibition curated by Lise Rathonie, President of the Professional Union of French Enamellers based in Limoges, France, where her Kumonoie cloisonné vessels are held in  the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

“The inspiration behind my Kumonoie cloisonné vessels began after I lost my beloved mother. To cope with the feeling of loss after burying her, I decided to create a “home” for her in heaven. Over time, as I started my own family, the inspiration for my work evolved. Now, I create with the intention of building a home for myself, one that will keep my family from feeling lonely after I’m gone. The glass lid represents the clouds in the sky. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed imagining clouds as cotton candy or a whale.”

A talented musician, she is also inspired by the music of Chopin.

Aya Iwata received her masters degree from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1994 and currently works as a part-time lecturer at Musashino Art University, Yokohama University of Art and Design, and Tokyo Metropolitan Kogei High School.

Iwata has garnered many awards for her work including 3 special awards at the 32nd International Jewelry Competition EMPATHY (Legnica, Poland) in 2024.
